That’s the end

Steve Bartman is still in hiding but former Cubs outfielder Moises Alou has finally broken his silence about the infamous eight inning in Game 6 of the NLCS.

Alou says he wouldn’t have caught the foul ball that bounced off Bartman’s hands, which appeared to be just above Alou’s glove.

“Everywhere I play, even now, people still yell, ‘Bartman! Bartman!’ I feel really bad,” Alou told the Associated Press. “You know what the funny thing is?” I wouldn’t have caught it anyway.”

Then what was the temper tantrum for? But finally, put this story to rest. Stop talking about it. It’s over, done, fineto. Like most Cubs fans, I blame Alex S. Gonzalez for tanking a taylor-made double play.

  1. I always felt bad for the guy, he wasn’t the only one in the stands going for that ball. I think Alou should have been a professional and kept his head in the game.

  2. Being a lifelong Cub fan, I, too, remember that fateful October night. Only five outs away from the first World Series on the North side in 58 years…oh God, I can still hear the screams.

Sure the Bartman foul ball is the most widely publicized reason for the Cubs collapse in the 2003 NLCS, but the fact of the matter is that it was only a foul ball. As my friend, Scott, mentioned in his blog, Alex Gonzalez clearly misplayed what would have been an inning-ending double play.

However, between the Bartman and Gonzo happenings, a more significant occurrence took place. A key player, or should I say, former player and then manager of our beloved Cubs, Dusty Baker, failed to come out of the dugout to calm down a noticeably shaken up Mark Prior and Cub defense. Had he regrouped our team and refocused his players, the Cubs could have contended for baseball’s most coveted title. Do you remember the phrase, “in Dusty, we trusty”? Well I, and millions of Cub fans, “trusty-ed” him to manage our team to the Promised Land, only to see him act as nothing more than a spectator. He, more than anyone, deserves the blame for the Cubs demise in 2003.

Personally, I have forgiven Steve Bartman. Cub fans should as well. I believe that the Cub organization, the city of Chicago and Chicago sports press corps should help dismiss this injustice done unto him with a heartfelt and long overdue public apology.

The past cannot be changed nor should is be re-lived. And until the past can be left in the past, the Cubs will be doomed to disappointment. So let’s forgive and forget.

  3. See the problem is there are still a bunch of yahoo, meatball Cubs “fans” out there who will always blame Bartman for what went down. I will not rehash the reasons, as the two other bloggers on this post eloquently said it all. My hope is that one of those yahoo, meatball Cubs “fans” replies to this post so we can hear their “reasons” why Bartman is to blame. Personally, those bozos know nothing about baseball. Oh, and I also blame the media for perpetuating this. The Extra Sexual Party Network (ESPN) and FOX love to enhance their “broadcasts” by replaying these scenes as they had with the Red Sox in the past. It’s 2008, lets discuss the fact that the Cubs still don’t have a legit leadoff hitter, or why Bobby Howry struggles to start the year. Not old crap from 2003.

    Thanks
