Go shove it, Brennaman

Last Wednesday, Cincinnati’s Adam Dunn hit a home run onto Sheffield Avenue. Next, about 15 baseballs where thrown back onto the field. A Wrigley Field tradition on steroids (maybe I shouldn’t use that comparison). But it was a fun, comical moment.

But one person didn’t find it funny. Long-time Reds broadcaster Marty Brennaman launched into a tirade about Cubs fans. He called us the most obnoxious fans in baseball, and people root for the Cubs to lose.

Excuse me, Mr. Brennaman. At least we have fans that come out to the park. Every day it’s a sell out. The Cubs surpass 3 million fans every season. The crowd is on its feet in the third inning cheering on the pitcher to get out of the inning.

Bad fans? Are you serious? Obnoxious? I say the most passionate in baseball.

Case in point. When the Cubs clinched the division last year IN Cincinnati, there was more blue in the stands than red — and your seats are red. Cubs fans outnumbered Reds fans 2 to 1. If it wasn’t for the Cubs, you would’ve had more vendors than paying ticket holders.

You root for the Cubs to lose? Well, get used to Cubs Nation rooting for the utter demise of the Cincinnati Reds. Chicagoans do hold a grudge.

Be careful what you say, Mr. Brennaman. You tainted a Hall of Fame career — and your son’s too.

  1. I don’t think he was ranting on the Cubs inability to get fans to the stadium. While I don’t agree with him 100% I would say that the fans are a little unruly at times. Throwing 15 balls on the field (why they have them is another argument in itself) is a little over the top. All it does is delay the game. How about when the cubbies aren’t doing so hot and they boo their own team? Or throw garbage onto the field while the game is in progress. You can’t argue that the fans have heart, but sometimes a lot of beer + heart is a bad combo.

  2. I actually have to agree with FatPat on this one Rook. This new breed of Cubs “fan” is not sitting well with me. As FatPat stated, they throw garbage on the field, more people on cell phones than watching the game, the premature booing, etc. I could really care less about what Marty Breneman thinks about Cubs fans. Its just his opinion. We all have them like we have pinkies. I hate to sound like an old man at 31 but these kids today are terrible. The tradition of throwing THE home run ball of the other team back is going to be killed because of these bozos.

  3. I agree that it is over the top, but for Breneman to denigrate the Cubs and their fans for the actions of 15 to 20 unruly fans is a bush move on his part. You wouldn’t see that type of announcing at the minor league level.
